What’s the Difference Between Synthetic Oil vs. Regular Oil?

When you’ve gotten an oil change in the Bloomington area have you ever wondered about the difference between synthetic oil vs. regular oil? It’s a question the Suburban Chevrolet service department hears often. The short answer: synthetic oil is more refined than regular oil. But the difference between synthetic vs. regular oil goes deeper than that, and using the wrong one could damage your engine. Here’s what you need to know about synthetic vs. regular oil.

What is Conventional (Regular) Oil?

Regular oil, which is also called conventional oil, is petroleum based. It’s distilled from crude oil that’s been mined from the ground. It’s been used for much of automotive history to keep moving engine parts lubricated. This reduces engine wear and protects your engine from high temperature damage.

What is Synthetic Oil?

Despite a name that can sound like this oil isn’t made from petroleum products, synthetic oil is still made from petrochemicals like regular oil through an intense process that creates a more refined, superior motor oil that contains higher lubrication properties and is more stable. It oxidizes less easily than conventional oil. It’s less viscous at lower temperatures, offers enhanced engine cleaning properties, and it is a better protectant for turbocharger engine parts. You don’t have to change synthetic oil as often as regular oil after driving in Minnetonka and Hopkins.

How Do Full Synthetic vs. Synthetic Blends Differ?

Now that you know a bit about the difference between synthetic vs. regular oil, what about the differences between full synthetic vs. synthetic blends? Synthetic blends are a combination of synthetic and regular oil, which makes it more affordable. If you drive a car that doesn’t require synthetic oil, but you’d like the performance benefits of synthetic, compare full synthetic vs. synthetic blends. Just check your owner’s manual first. Some cars can only use full synthetic oil. If you’re unsure if your car is one of them, contact our service department and let us help.
