How Often Should You Rotate Your Tires?

mechanic performs wheel alignment

Rotating your tires is an important part of your vehicle’s regular maintenance routine. It helps your tires wear more evenly, which means you lower your risk of flats and blowouts along with improving your ride and fuel economy. Do you know how many miles before you rotate tires? The general recommendation on when to rotate tires is every 5,000-7,000 miles on Bloomington streets. The service center at Suburban Chevrolet has everything you need to answer the question, how often should you rotate your tires.

Why Rotate Tires?

In addition to making your tires less likely to go flat or blow out, here are some more reasons to rotate your tires on time:

  • Improved traction on slippery roads
  • Less noise on the road
  • Relieves unnecessary stress on the drivetrain

Keep tire rotation as part of your regular maintenance routine. While regular tire rotation won’t make your tires last forever, it will improve their life and quality until it’s time to buy replacements. When that time comes, our tire center can help.

When to Rotate Tires on FWD and RWD Vehicles

How many miles to rotate tires doesn’t vary based on drivetrain, but Minnetonka drivers who have front-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive should know that their drivetrains have a specific rotation pattern that will optimize the process. In an FWD vehicle, power is sent to the front tires, but an RWD vehicle gets power to the back tires. The tires that get more power will wear faster. Here are the tire rotation patterns for FWD and RWD vehicles:

  • For FWD tire rotation, the rear right tire will go on the front left, and vice versa. When moving the front tires to the back they should stay on the same side.
  • For RWD tire rotation, invert the process above – flip sides when moving the front tires to the back, but keep the rear tires on the same side when moving them forward.

While FWD and RWD vehicles will need their tires rotated every 5,000-7,000 miles, certain types of driving will lower how many miles to rotate tires. Off-roading and towing can make your tires wear faster and require more frequent rotations.

AWD Tire Rotation

How many miles to rotate tires on an AWD model? These vehicles work slightly differently since each tire wears differently, and at different speeds, so it’s recommended to rotate AWD tires every 3,000-5,000 miles. Your owner’s manual can give you exact numbers.
