The Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA as it’s more commonly known, rates vehicles based on fuel efficiency. However, your mileage may fluctuate depending on various factors, including the conditions of the road. If you’re looking for a way to easily calculate your actual gas mileage on Bloomington and Minnetonka roads, the team at Suburban Chevrolet is here to provide you with a guide on how to calculate gas mileage. Review our handy gas mileage calculator formula below, and schedule an appointment with our service team if you have any questions or concerns about optimizing your vehicle’s mpg ratings.

Gas Mileage Calculator

Hopkins drivers can easily estimate gas mileage in their vehicles with this simple gas mileage calculator formula:

  1. Fill up your tank to the maximum, reset your trip odometer, or record the exact mileage after refilling. Be sure you figure out how much gas your tank holds by checking the owner’s manual.
  2. Drive like you would normally. If you accelerate more briskly or slowly than usual, your typical gas mileage might differ from your recording.
  3. Fill up your tank and record your mileage. If you wait longer to refill, your calculation will be more accurate because you’ll have a more balanced mix of driving conditions.
  4. The most straightforward way to calculate gas mileage is to divide the miles traveled by the gallons of gas your vehicle took to refill. In sum, that’s miles driven divided by gallons of gas used.
  5. If you forget to check how many gallons you filled up your car at the pump on your gas receipt, you can go by where your tank was refilled (like ¼ or ½), then divide out your total tank capacity to come to the total gallons of gas refilled. Then, divide your miles by that approximation. Remember that this method is inaccurate because gas gauges aren’t always correct.
